Resistance bands are good for other types of exercise, but if you are focusing on your abs, they are not as mandatory. Your abs will get some residual toning if you use these bands to do exercises for your arms and legs, but it is more a flexibility trainer. Your abdomen does not have the ability to be as flexible as your arms or legs.

What you may want to do to ensure you are targeting the right muscles is either buy a pilates machine that would have an instruction book. Ideally you would see a trainer at a gym to help. Even pilates DVDs can be beneficial.
