The system was developed by Joseph Pilates, a physician of Greek descent, born in Germany. It was designed, or rather, refined, a way to rehabilitate shell shocked soldiers, to help them develop coordination and personal body control again, by taking decades old techniques and turning them into a cohesive program.

That’s really what it’s all about: Precise movement, physical focus, and the best way to get that is with tight middle body control.
